Rehabilitating Renovations Revive Nursing Center

CLIENT: Silvercrest Center for Nursing & Rehabilitation
PROJECT: Resident Room Renovations
COST: $3.6M
TIMEFRAME: 16 months
SERVICES PROVIDED: General Contractor

The Situation:

The Silvercrest Center for Nursing & Rehabilitation needed to renovate its facility in Briarwood, Queens without displacing its residents for an extended period of time. All types of patients occupied the four-floor facility from respirator patients to amputees to psychiatric patients to typical nursing home residents.

The Challenge:

Severe moisture infiltration seeped into 276 resident rooms causing substantial corrosion of subsurface gypcrete. Silvercrest could not afford to relocate a mass number of patients in order to renovate the space. With tight timelines under very restrictive Healthcare protocols for construction, Silvercrest could only relocate a maximum 10 patients at a time for no more than 5 days. The diverse scope of work had to be coordinated around sensitive existing infrastructure such as oxygen and dialysis piping all while being enclosed in a negative air dust barrier utilizing certified HEPA filters.

The Solution:

Logistical planning and multiple work shifts.

CLS prepared a detailed logistics plan and schedule that cycled the renovation of 5-6 rooms at a time providing minimal disruption to Silvercrest’s residents and staff. Multiple shifts allowed carpenters and electricians to work during the day while flooring was installed overnight.

The Result:

Revitalized residential rooms reopen.

Completed on time, no Silvercrest resident had to be relocated for more than 5 days ensuring all residents were appropriately taken care of throughout the process. A trusted relationship formed with the Silvercrest Center for Nursing & Rehabilitation team that continues to this day.
